Svyatoslav Nikolaevich Roerich, the son of Nikolai Konstantinovich Roerich, is considered as his national artist both in India and in Russia. He is a bright and truly unique figure. In addition to artistic activity, Svyatoslav, like his father, was engaged in public activities. From childhood, the boy was interested in painting, modeling, and the natural sciences. He studied in the USA, first at Columbia University, and then at Harvard. Returning to India, he married the famous actress Devika Rani, who became the artist's muse and his constant model.

In all his works, Roerich developed the principles of colorism laid down by his father - but in general, his son’s work is much brighter and aesthetically closer to Indian culture. The artist’s style is easily recognizable, his genre paintings are scenes of a certain phantasmagoria glowing with paints, sometimes when they acquire an absolutely cosmic sound.

Svetoslav Roerich began his career as a portrait painter and achieved great success in this genre. With the help of deep empathy, he always tried to understand the character of the depicted person, to understand the essence of his experiences. “A successful portrait is more than a simple resemblance,” said the artist. Later, Roerich Jr. began to work in different genres, but knowledge of human nature and the anatomy of a person’s face invariably helped him create believable and virtuoso works.

There are several self-portraits of Svyatoslav Roerich, created by him in different years of his life, but the most famous is painted in beige and brown. In this picture, the master portrayed himself in Indian clothes. Despite the relatively young age, Svyatoslav's whiskey is touched by gray hair, and graying is also planned in the beard. Wavy brown hair is combed back, large brown eyes look serious and excited. Well-groomed hands with long, thin fingers folded in his lap. An artist with a deep inner world - these are the first words that come to mind when looking at this self-portrait.
