The famous Russian artist Vasily Polenov belongs to the era of Russian painting of the second half of the 19th century. He gave the world a large number of works displaying the most beautiful landscapes of immense Russia. One of the most significant paintings in the artist’s biography is a work with the simple and capacious title Winter, however, despite the apparent mediocrity, the work has earned worldwide recognition.

When you look at the picture there is a feeling of harmony and calm, a sense of peace. Polenov, with his masterpiece, takes us to this picturesque place, allowing us to forget about pressing problems and failures. It seems that the artist is trying to convey how beautiful the nature around can be, especially in such a wonderful period as winter.

Vasily Polenov for a long time dreamed of living in the middle of nature, so that there was an opportunity to embody his creative ideas. Having bought the Behovo estate, located near the Oka River, Polenov built the house according to his own project, not forgetting the workshops of artists for his friends.

In the painting Winter, the artist depicted the surroundings of his estate. Judging by how the picture is written, we can conclude how much the author is pleased with his life among the indescribable beauties of nature. In the picture, we see a fragment of a forest in the distance, asleep trees, slightly sprinkled with snow, a path through the hills, which is broken by skids from the sleigh. The smell of snow and a sensation of frosty freshness of air immediately slip through my memory.

Painting Winter does not carry a special meaning that makes you think, it helps to relax, looking at the Russian landscape of the Tula outback. The author will later return to work on another landscape, on which he again depicts the beauty of the winter period in nature, after which this newly made painting will become the main attraction of the art gallery in Astrakhan.
